Episode 11, Part 3: Pharmaceuticals And Our Society

Episode 11, Part 3: Pharmaceuticals And Our Society

Who do you think should hold the responsibility for the negative impact that pharmaceuticals play in our society?

The talking points for these four segments are:

  • Why are there so many options for pharmaceutical products?
  • Do they offer hope in a capsule, bottle, or creams?
  • What control do pharmaceutical companies have over availability and access?
  • Does variety add to consumer confusion and misinformation?
  • How much information is provided through commercial advertisement? Who are some of the targeted audiences?
  • What role do prescribing providers play in the education process? Ethical responsibility to the patient?
  • At what point does a patient become a consumer - what are the ramifications for health maintenance?
  • Cost - generic versus prescription? Over-the-Counter versus prescription? What’s in the name?
  • Hypocrisy of use / Stigma of use
  • Access biases - does this exist?
